We built forme because publishing infrastructure became a political question, and the existing answers weren't good enough.
That shift didn't happen overnight. It happened the way most important things happen, gradually, then all at once. Platforms that once felt neutral revealed their incentive structures. Institutions that were supposed to hold power accountable turned out to be dependent on it. The infrastructure that independent voices rely on, the servers, the subscriber lists, the draft folders, the source relationships, turned out to be owned by parties with their own interests, their own vulnerabilities, and their own compellability.
If you publish anything that matters to anyone with power over you, the platform holding your work is not neutral infrastructure.
It is a third party to your relationship with your readers. And third parties can be pressured, acquired, compelled, and breached.
What's actually happening
Publishing platforms are data businesses. Not because they're malicious, most aren't, but because their economics require it. When a platform's revenue comes from advertisers or venture investors, it needs data to satisfy them. When a platform grows through network effects, your audience becomes their asset. When a platform stores your drafts, your subscriber relationships, and your source contacts in plaintext on their servers, they have something that can be subpoenaed, hacked, or handed over.
ProtonMail didn't invent encryption. It made it usable at the moment when usability became urgent. We're doing that for publishing.
Signal didn't invent end-to-end encryption. Firefox and DuckDuckGo are having their best years not because they suddenly got better, but because people finally asked the question they should have asked earlier: who benefits when I use this?
We asked that question about publishing platforms. The answers weren't good.
What forme is
forme is a publishing platform built for the world as it actually is. It does everything the other platforms do, beautiful editor, email newsletters, paid subscriptions, custom domains, analytics, team workflows. The difference is structural, not cosmetic.
